POPPYCOCK
Οι Poppycock ιδρύθηκαν το 2012 απο την Una Baines (The Fall / The Blue Orchids / The Fates), η οποία έχει χαρακτηριστεί ως «πρωτοπόρος του New Wave» και «αθόρυβη ηρωίδα της μουσικής σκηνής του Μάντσεστερ».
Έχοντας σαν βάση το πλούσιο μουσικό αρχείο της Una –με κυκλοφορημένα και ακυκλοφόρητα κομμάτια–, οι Poppycock ξεκίνησαν ως μια χαλαρή κολλεκτίβα μουσικών. Η Una αφηγείται: «Η πρώτη μας συναυλία έγινε στο όμορφο αλλά υπό κατάρρευση Hippodrome Theatre στο Hulme, μια γειτονιά του Μάντσεστερ. Είχα συνεργαστεί ξεχωριστά με τα δύο μισά της μπάντας, οπότε η συναυλία ήταν η πρώτη φορά που παίξαμε όλοι μαζί–ένα βάπτισμα του πυρός στην κυριολεξία!»
Οι Poppycock μερικές φορές μεταμορφώνονται τεχνηέντως στους The Fates, ένα παλαιότερο project της Baines με το οποίο εξερεύνησε με αφοπλιστική ειλικρίνεια τη φεμινιστική gothic/folk αισθητική. Ο ιδιαίτερος ήχος των Poppycock έχει χαρακτηριστεί ως "Cockypop", αφού πλαισιώνεται από ιδιότυπα παιχνιδιάρικους στίχους και έμπειρη μουσικότητα. Το κομμάτι "Lizard Man", για παράδειγμα, γράφτηκε μετά από ένα όνειρο της Una για τους The Fall και αποτελεί φόρο τιμής στον Mark E. Smith!
Το συλλογικό και δημιουργικό πνεύμα των Poppycock συχνά οδηγεί σε αναμίξεις και συνέργειες ανάμεσα στη μoυσική και τις υπόλοιπες τέχνες. Για παράδειγμα, το εξώφυλλο του άλμπουμ Furia (1985) των The Fates δημιουργήθηκε από κοινού με την punk εικαστικό Linder Sterling, το logo των Poppycock σχεδιάστηκε σε συνεργασία με τον Pacal Le Gras, ενώ το εξώφυλλο του single "Iggy Pop" δημιουργήθηκε από την Suzanne Smith, αδερφή του Mark E Smith.

Οι The Periods. ξεκίνησαν το 2012 ως ένα power trio proto-punk πείραμα, το οποίο μέσα στα χρόνια μετατράπηκε σε ένα ηλεκτρικό κουαρτέτο ~ και ενίοτε κουιντέτο. Ηχοθραύσματα από post-punk και γκαζωμένο surf μέχρι ανατολίτικες κλίμακες, σε μία ολομέτωπη punk επίθεση. Το πρώτο τους full-lp κυκλοφόρησε τον Ιανουάριο του 2025.

Poppycock from Manchester, the latest musical venture of Una Baines of The Fall and The Blue Orchids, and The Periods. from Athens share the stage of ILION plus and together common, musical -and not only- concerns. On Tuesday, April 15, two fem post-punk groups take the stage of ILION plus for an unpredictable and extremely interesting meeting.
Hailing from Manchester, Poppycock, the latest musical venture of Una Baines (The Fall, The Blue Orchids), joins forces with Athens’ very own The Periods. for a night of shared sonic explorations—both musical and beyond. On Tuesday, April 15, two fierce female-led post-punk bands take the stage at ILION Plus for an electrifying, unpredictable, and utterly compelling meeting of sounds.

POPPYCOCK
Poppycock was formed in 2012 by Una Baines (The Fall / The Blue Orchids / The Fates), who has been described as a "New Wave Pioneer" and "Unassuming heroine of Manchester's music scene."
Drawing from Una’s rich back-catalogθε of both released and unreleased songs, Poppycock first emerged as a fluid and free-floating collective of musicians. Una recalls: “Our first gig was in the beautiful yet dilapidated Hippodrome theatre in Hulme. I had worked separately with each half of the band, so the show was actually the first time we all played together. A true baptism by fire!”
Poppycock sometimes "shapeshifts" into The Fates, an earlier project of Baines dedicated to and celebrating an unapologetic feminist gothic/folk aesthetic. Poppycock’s signature sound—dubbed “Cockypop”—blends eccentric lyricism with seasoned musicianship.The track "Lizard Man," for instance, was born from a dream Una had about The Fall and serves as a tribute to the late Mark E. Smith.
Poppycock’s spirit of collectivism and creative freedom often results in a crossover between art and music. The cover of Furia (1985) by The Fates was co-created with punk artist Linder Sterling. The Poppycock logo was crafted in collaboration with Pascal Le Gras, while the cover for the "Iggy Pop" single was designed by Suzanne Smith, sister of Mark E. Smith.

Poppycock’s new album, Magic Mothers, is now available from the Tiny Global Productions label.

THE PERIODS.
The Periods formed in 2012 as a proto-punk experiment that slowly evolved into an electric quartet (sometimes a quintet). Their sound hits some precious sweet spots—from post-punk quirkiness to white-hot surf twang and from mind-bending Middle Eastern scales to full-throttle punk assault. Their self-titled album was released on January 2025.
